Westword and Voice Media Group

Neoera collaborated with the Denver Westword and its parent company, Voice Media Group, for its new headquarters in the historic Dodge Building, located in Denver’s Capitol Hill district. The beloved independent Denver publication prides itself on publishing free daily online articles on trending local news, music and the arts, as well as long-form journalism on serious issues affecting Denver and the surrounding community. Just as the Westword keeps its pulse on the Denver scene, it was the design team’s goal to reflect a trend-forward yet serious vibe within the interior space. One of the main architectural goals of the team was to maintain the existing architectural character of the building’s interior, accenting the barrel vaulted ceiling and historical articulations on the west side and “punching” the interior with super graphics and colorful murals in the remainder of the space. In the Programming phase, Neoera uncovered an organization whose success depends on its employees' abilities to brainstorm and innovate in highly collaborative settings. And while this collaboration is key, employees also need the ability to isolate and focus on the generation of stories and content in acoustic privacy. In this vein, Neoera designed flexible spaces where staff members could easily vacillate between different types of working/focus areas. Neoera designed a wide variety of workspaces to include private offices, open sit-stand areas, 1 large "bullpen" for sales/marketing employees to collaborate, small 2-4 person deep work areas, larger “stand-up” areas for the entire company to gather as well as 1 Board Room for large, customer meetings. The Westword has its fingers on the pulse of the Denver art scene and in turn, has developed deep relationships with graffiti artists. We identified 7 moments within the space to encounter murals which incorporate vibrant colors and play with viewers’ perceptions of dimensionality.
